Antivirus Scanning
There are two ways of starting an on-demand scan with Online Armor ++; either from the Settings tab in the Antivirus section by clicking on the "Start scan" button, or by right-clicking the Online Armor tray icon and choosing "Start Antivirus Scan" from the menu.
Online Armor also adds an item to the Windows Explorer context menu that will allow you to scan an individual file or folder. Simply right-click a file or folder and choose "Scan with Online Armor".
Antivirus Scan window
The Antivirus Scan window will be displayed while Online Armor ++ is performing a scan.
The Scan Results section is organized using a table with the following columns:
- Status – Shows whether the program is Allowed, Blocked or set to Ask. If the program is set to Run Safer, this will be indicated next to the status as (safer).
- File Name – Shows the file name of the program on your hard drive.
- Detection – Shows the reason for detection (either infected or suspicious).
- Infection – Displays the name of the infection, or in the case of a suspicious file, indicates whether it is an invisible file or an alternate datastream.
Below the Scan Results section is a progress bar that displays the percentage of the scan that has been completed. Beneath the progress bar is an icon of a magnifying glass over a folder. The text adjacent to this icon changes depending on the current status of the scan.
While a scan is initializing, "Calculating files count" will be displayed and if a scan is in progress it will shows the path of the current file being scanned. If you pause the scan this text will changed to "Paused" and when a scan has completed it will display "Done".
The button on the right also changes depending on scan status. If a scan is running, a Pause button will be displayed and clicking this button will pause the scan. If a scan is paused, a Continue button will be displayed and clicking this button will resume the scan.
In the left pane of the Antivirus Scan window, there are three boxes.
The Actions box contains the following options:
- RunSafer – Sets the selected program to "RunSafer"
- Allow – Sets Online Armor ++ to automatically Allow the program to run.
- Block – Sets Online Armor ++ to automatically Block the program from running.
- Ask – Sets Online Armor ++ to pop-up the next time this program tries to run, allowing you to Allow or Block it at that time.
- Delete – Removes an infected file from your computer.
- Extract – Allows you to extract an alternate datastream to a location of your choice. Online Armor ++ detects the presence of any ADS during the initial scan but they must be extracted in order to be scanned for malicious content.
- Go to AMN – Takes you to the Emsisoft Anti-Malware Network's online file database to view any information that has been collected about this particular program.
You can also right-click any file in the scan results list to access the above options. Some options apply only to certain file types and will be greyed out if they don't apply to the currently selected entry.
The Statistics box shows the following details in real-time as the scan progresses:
- Total – Shows the total number of files to be scanned.
- Excluded – Shows the total number of files that are excluded from the scan.
- Processed – Shows the total number of files scanned so far.
- Clean – Shows the total number of files scanned so far that are not infected.
- Infected – Shows the total number of files scanned so far that are infected.
- Suspicious – Shows the total number of files scanned so far that have been detected as suspicious and require further investigation.
The Legend box provides a visual reference for the color coding of the AV scan results, including what each color indicates.
