a-squared Anti-Malware and a-squared Free 3.0 released!
After weeks of Beta testing we are proud to introduce a new major release of a-squared: Version 3.0
New features in both programs:
- Vista support
Both a-squared Free and the large a-squared Anti-Malware Edition are completely compatible with the new Microsoft Vista operating system. Many basic changes were needed to the software for Vista support because users do not have administrator rights as standard. For this reason, a-squared 3.0 contains a new Windows Service, which runs with system rights and always has access to the relevant areas, even if you are not logged on as the administrator.
- Non-Admin Support
The new a-squared Windows Service allows full non-administrator support. Regardless of which Windows user account you are logged into the PC with, a-squared always protects the entire PC and can search the entire PC for Malware. It is recommended that only software installations are done with administrator rights. It is much safer to use a normal user account for daily work because this removes many Malware attack vectors.
- 50% less RAM usage
Since the number of Malware signatures has doubled in the last year, the memory usage has also correspondingly increased over time. Despite ever more high-performance computers, we have received many requests for a-squared to use less RAM. We have responded accordingly and optimized the relevant algorithms. The result is that the new a-squared uses only about half the memory of the previous version.
- Extended Traces and TrackingCookie Scan
The non-admin support provides an additional advantage: The a-squared Scanner Version 3.0 can now recognize Spyware Traces and TrackingCookies in the profiles of all user accounts, instead of previously only in the profile of the currently logged-on user. This ensures that Malware is not reactivated when a different user logs on.
- New Anti-Malware Network
In Version 3.0, recognized heuristic files can be directly transferred from Quarantine to the a-squared Analysis Team for examination. In this way, you help to improve the quality of the scanner through heuristics. False alarms can thus be more quickly solved and new signatures for new Malware can be more quickly made available. You can select whether recognized heuristic files are automatically transferred during the Online Update or whether the files are to be sent manually from Quarantine. If you have a question relating to a sent file, then you can leave a message and your contact information so that you can receive an analysis of the file you sent.
- Extended Quarantine
You can now manually place files in Quarantine if you suspect that they may be damaging. The new "Save copy" button allows you to extract Quarantine data to a special folder so that you can (e.g.) place it in a ZIP file and send it via email. The Malware is secured for this and cannot cause any damage.
New features that only relate to Anti-Malware 3.0:
- New Rights Management
The new non-admin support means that basically any logged-in user can change the configuration of a-squared. However, it is not always desirable for all PC or network domain users to have full access to the a-squared settings. For this reason, you as the administrator can define specific access rights for individual user accounts. The "Access rights" dialog is located under "Settings" in the a-squared Anti-Malware Security Center.
- Malware IDS for Vista
The a-squared Malware IDS (HIDS) and the OnExecution Scan (scans programs using signatures when they are started) are fully executable on the standard 32 Bit Edition of Microsoft Vista. Under Vista 64 the a-squared Anti-Malware Guard runs in a special mode with OnExecution Scan, but without the extended Malware IDS, since there is currently no suitable operating system interface to support this. This will become available when Vista Service Pack 1 is released.
- Extended Malware IDS: Autoruns
In Version 3.0, the Malware IDS can also report on newly created autostart entries. Information is also provided on the respective program that created the autostart entry.
- Extended Malware IDS: Hosts
The Malware IDS now also reports on changed to the Hosts file. The previous version could also do this but the new version also shows the program that wants to make changes to the Hosts file. This allows you to recognize if a program will be automatically loaded without your knowledge at the next system start. This allows you to prevent the installation of Malware in a targeted manner.
- Extended Malware IDS: Hidden Installations
a-squared Anti-Malware generates a warning as soon as a suspicious program attempts an invisible installation. In such cases, you can click on "Block" if you do not recognize the program or are not consciously installing it.
- Extended Malware IDS: Virus Recognition
Programs attempting to modify or patch executable programs are innately suspicious, since this technique is mainly used by viruses to attach themselves to benign programs. The Malware IDS informs you of this type of viral behavior so that you can intervene if necessary.
- Extended Malware IDS: Rootkits
Rootkits are a type of Trojan with the purpose of completely hiding things such as files and processes. They manipulate core elements of the operating system in order to remain undetected. Hidden Rootkit processes are also detected and reported by a-squared Malware IDS in Version 3.0.
- Improved User Interface
The "Settings" menu item in a-squared Anti-Malware has been split into two separate menu items: Guard and Settings since the settings options have already become quite extensive, this separation was necessary to preserve a clear structure.
- Improved HiJackFree
a-squared HiJackFree is now an even more powerful tool for specialists who want to manually find and remove Malware. The new multifunctional toolbar combines a function similar to the Vista search box with new filters for masking known benign programs. This allows the focus to remain on the truly relevant things.
