1. Select scan method
The following scan methods are available:
-
Quick Scan
Checks all active programs, Spyware Traces and TrackingCookies. The quick scan only takes about one minute and provides a general overview of whether or not your system is infected with active malware.
-
Smart Scan
In addition to the tests done in the quick scan, the clever scan also checks the most important folders on the hard drive. This includes the system folders of the operating system and the installed programs. Stored data is however not checked.
-
Deep Scan
This scan method offers the highest level of safety and should be run at least once on every PC. All installed hard drives are thoroughly scanned for Malware infection. However, depending on the size of the hard drives, this type of system check can take up to several hours.
-
Custom Scan
This type of user-defined scan allows you to edit all the scanner parameters yourself. An extensive range of settings is available. You can define which drives or folders are to be scanned. Memory, Traces and TrackingCookie scans can also be switched on and off. If the Riskware scan is activated, then harmless programs that are often used in conjunction with Malware are also reported. You can also freely define whether packed archives in ZIP, RAR and CAB formats should also be searched for Malware. Under the NTFS file system, it has also become possible to create one or more hidden data streams (Alternate Data Streams) associated with a file. The scanner can also search for and safely remove Malware in such Alternate Data Streams.

2. Scan results
In the results list you can already see all suspicious objects found, even while the scanner is still running. Click on the name of the found Malware to learn more about it. A new window with a detailed description will open. The scan will continue to run while you do this. As soon as the scan is finished, a button for removing all selected Malware appears. Select the entries you wish to remove and then click the "Quarantine selected objects" button to move the Malware into quarantine. The quarantine stores the Malware in a secure environment so that it can no longer cause any damage.

3. Quarantine
When you are sure that moving a Malware object into quarantine has not made the system unstable, then you can irretrievably delete it. To do this, select one or more objects in the quarantine and click the "Delete" button. If you discover that you do actually require a recognized file, click the "Restore" button. However, this makes a dangerous file 'armed' again.

Important note!
The a-squared Web Malware Scanner can free your PC from Malware, but it does not offer long-term protection against Malware infection! For constant protection you need the Background Guard, which is only provided in the a-squared Anti-Malware Personal Edition. If you have found more than three suspicious objects on your PC, then you should consider installing permanent protection as soon as possible because your PC is in great danger.
